Nearly every French babies and mums know her. In my family we all had one when we were Baby. She is the famous Sophie la Girafe!
Born 55 years ago in Paris on 25th May, Saint Sophie’s Day. Since that time, her design has remained the same and she hasn’t aged at all. She was an immediate success as she was the first toy stimulating each of baby’s senses. Now, she’s the most popular teething toy in the world! She is timeless and cross-generational.
She was created by Mr Rampeau, an expert in transforming sap from the Hevea trees into latex, a 100% natural rubber. He came with the idea to create a Giraffe at a time when the only animal toys available were farm animals or pet figures.
This latex is natural, soft, elastic, waterproof, insulating and pleasant to the smell and touch. The long legs and neck of the giraffe is easy to grip for small hands. Sophie squeaks when baby presses it, which stimulates his hearing as well as makes him understand the link between cause and effect. Her contrasting attention catching spots provide visual stimulation… Sophie isn’t just a teether but a toy to stimulate baby and develop his 5 senses from the age of 3 : touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste.
That makes it the perfect toy for a Newborn. Even Prince George needed Sophie to soothe his sore gums. (courtesy of Alison Jackson!).
Sophie the Giraffe is still “traditionally“ produced in France; a process that involves more than 14 manual operations. The giraffes are made by 10 in a plaster mold and then use the rotational moulding. As the latex is a living material, it takes several weeks of maturation. The finishing touches such as grinding, adding the squeaking device, coloring are made manually. Each giraffe is hand-painted with food paint and therefore is unique. A strict quality control is also in place to make sure this little giraffe meet the safety standards in each country.
